RaceMill Collegiate with Austin Hinson of CU A modestly competitive human being By RM // September 18, 2015 Austin Hinson isn't competitive... or is he? He is a sophmore driving the next generation of CU Cycling and looking to make a big impact at Nationals this week. Hometown: Matthews, NCSchool: CU BoulderYear in School: SophomoreSport: Cycling/Plants vs ZombiesTwitter/ @austin__hinsonInstagram/ @austin__hinsonHow did you find Cycling? My junior year in high school I wanted to bike to school to reduce the number of cars on the road. My parents were not fans because Weddington, NC is not a bike friendly area in any way. So I would pack my bike into a car and drive it to my friends house and bike from there. My mom found the car one day when she was walking our dogs. I was grounded for a week or so but I've been hooked on bikes ever since. What drives your competitiveness?I wouldn't call myself competitive. I just want to be the best at every thing. But I'm really not competitive.Athlete that inspires you? Why?Everyone on the CU team inspires me. Not to be cliche or sentimental or anything but seeing how hard all of our team members work everyday makes me want to work to get better and help out the team. How many years have you been competing? One many years.What/where is your favorite place to ride/train? What/Who will you bring (people, gear, food, etc)I love Boulder. There are tons of group rides, rolling hills, flat areas, mountains, and of course the amazing facility and staff at the Boulder Valley Velodrome. Transferring from FSU there are infinitely more ways to train here and having drivers that do not hate you is nice. Always bring a banana and Raspberry Skratch in the waterGroup Training or do you prefer solitude? why?I prefer to ride in groups. My favorite group ride in Charlotte is the COCAC Ride which is practically a race. I think everyone working hard and pushing each other makes it more fun and you get a better work out than if you're on your own.Best result so far?Runner up in the 6th grade geography bee. What are you working on right now?I'm working on a collaborative series of poems with my dear friend and leaf eater Haley Guy.What are you training for now?The world record for longest breath hold.Training secrets? Care to share?Watch out for cars.Do you have a dream race you want to create?I'd like to have a collegiate stage race in Colorado that goes through all of the schools that have bike teams. I would also like to see the longest lap race at Collegiate Track Nationals.Training Tracks: Favorite songs to train/race to?
